Bay Area Nurse Christine Yee Receives Jefferson Award

Christine Yee, a San Francisco nurse at Kaiser's Medical Center in Oakland, just received the Jefferson Award as awarded by the American Institute for Public Service.

According to the Chronicle's article, Yee started a dragon boat racing team for her kaiser co-workers. She also mentors some youth teams.

Congratulations to her. If you see her at the Kaiser Permanente San Francisco International Dragon Boat Festival Sept. 22-23 at Treasure Island, make sure to say hello.

Dragon Boat Capsized in Canada

As reported by www.cknw.com, a dragon boat carrying 24 female passengers overturned in the region of Barnet Marine Park inside Burrard Inlet in Canada. No major injuries were reported and all boaters had been wearing life preservers. Make sure to always have an emergency plan for those rare instances when your dragon boat capsizes. 5th Dragon Boat Club Crew World Championships / new watercourse

Check out this news article by the Toronto Star that describes the preparations and construction of the new $23 million watercourse built especially for the 5th Dragon Boat Club Crew World Championships in August, 2006. According to the article, "more than 4,000 competitors from 25 countries are expected to converge on the city for the International Dragon Boat Federation event, the first world championships in the sport held in Toronto, and organizers are predicting 100,000 spectators."

Dragon Boaters Unite Against Cancer, Disabilities

Dragon Boat Festivals are inherently competitive. Boaters race against the clock and other teams to get to the finish line and achieve their best times. But dragon boating and dragon boat racers often compete against human conditions like cancer and physical disabilities. For example, the Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival regularly raises funds for the Peterborough Regional Health Centre's Breast Assessment Centre. Read more about it here. In Singapore, visually-handicapped paddlers race on a team known as Naga Merah. See this article for more info. And there are multiple teams made up of breast cancer survivors, including the Los Angeles Pink Dragons. Dragon Boating is more than just a quest for first place for a single team. Dragon Boating is a mission for enhancement of being and a community of strength.

Rowing Fitness/Training article in Chronicle

The San Francisco Chronicle published an excellent article in the 12/23/05 edition about Performance Max or PMax training at local fitness centers, specifically Club One Fitness. This type of conditioning uses the Concept2 ergonomic rower ("erg") that simulates open-water rowing in a stationary setting. The goal of Pmax is to build overall strength and cardiovascular efficiency.

I used to work at Club One with Jim Karanas, the Pmax lead trainer at Club One, and I can say that he is very qualified and incredibly dedicated to this specialized training regimen.

Race Results, Oct 22-23, 2005 2nd Gulf Coast International Dragon Boat Regatta

Race Results from the 2nd Gulf Coast International Dragon Boat Regatta/ 2005 USDBF Central Region Championships & ADBA International Festival held October 22-23, 2005 can be found at the Texas Dragon Boat Association website or at their race results page.

The Northern California-based Dragon Warriors team did exceptionally well, finishing first in the 500m Premier Mixed (Division A); first in the 500m Premier Women; first in the 500m Premier Open (Division A); second in the 250m Premier Mixed; first in the 250 Premier Open; and first in the 1000m Premier Open. The Dragon Warriors won the Overall Dragon Boat Regatta award for best overall team.

Big Dragon Boat Races in August, 2006

The month of August, 2006, looks to be a busy one for serious dragon boat competitors.

The International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) Club Crew World Championships will be held from August 8 to August 13, 2006, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Visit here for info.

The 2006 USDBF U.S. National DragonBoat Racing Championships will be held from August 25-27, 2006, in Tampa, Florida. Visit here for info. This championship, often referred as Nationals, is often used to help select the U.S. national team that will represent the U.S. in 2007 at the 8th World Dragon Boat Championships in Sydney, Australia. If you live in Northern California or the San Francisco-Bay Area, the best place to begin to finding a team is the California Dragon Boating Association CDBA website at http://www.cdba.org/index.shtml . This site has an excellent design and is very easy to use for locating basic information on dragon boating and the different local teams. The CDBA site also has a link, http://www.sfdragonboat.com/, that promotes the annual dragon boating festival.

Will Dragon Boating be included in the 2008 Olympics?

If you are interested in the possibility of dragon boating being an official sport at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, make sure to sign the petition at http://www.beijingdragon2008.com/ and tell everyone you know about it.
